J Class racing Falmouth Bay July 2012

J Class racing in Falmouth Bay

J Class racing Falmouth Bay taken July 2012 and when the boats raced over several days in Falmouth Bay. Another video and a slide show of images from a few years ago.

About the J Class boats.

Three J-Class yachts were still in existence by the 1980s all three having been designed by CE Nicholson: Shamrock V, Endeavour and Velsheda. The revival of the J-Class started with a refit of both Endeavour and Shamrock V.

The 150th Jubilee of America’s Cup celebration on the Isle of Wight held in 2001 found the three existing J Class appearing for an around the island race.

The J-Class Association was formed in 2000. Replicas and original designs have been constructed with the association organises racing and appearances at regattas and racing events around the world. You can read more about the background and history of the J Class boats here on their official web site.  Thir visit to Falmouth created a great spectacle which any video or image gallery will fail to capture as compared to being out there in the bay close to these magnificent boats slicing through the water.

There currently 9 boats in the class JK3: SHAMROCK V, JK7: VELSHEDA, JK4: ENDEAVOUR, J5: RANGER, JK6: HANUMAN, JH1: LIONHEART, JH2: RAINBOW, J8: TOPAZ, JS1: SVEA.

The fleet travels around the world racing in some of the world’s most glamorous locations.  St Barths in the Caribbean, Saint Tropez,  Sardinia, Bermuda, Rhode Island, Cowes, Newport and of course Falmouth. They came back in 2015 and will hopefully return so we can experience more J Class racing in Falmouth soon.
