This video captures the comings and goings in the harbour at Newlyn.
The local economy in Newlyn is centred on its harbour and the fishing industry. The port was a major catcher of pilchard until the 1960s. and today is still one of if not the largest fishing port in terms of landings in Britain.
However, Newlyn’s historical association with the arts has ensured a number of artists and art galleries are established in the area. The Newlyn Scool artists community became famous in the period between 1880 and 1890 including the painters Gotch, Tayler and Henry Scott Tuke. Newlyn harbour is also home to the fish market.
The current largest collection of work by the Newlyn School is held by Penlee House Gallery and Museum in nearby Penzance.
The Newlyn Art Gallery houses a collection of modern art. Close to Penzance Newlyn is always popular among visitors to Cornwall
