This is the second video clip of the laid up shipping in the river Fal. The slump in cargoes and rates has meant that many shipowners have been forced to lay up vessels on a care and maintenance basis with a minimum crew to reduce the running costs.
The River Fal is a safe and sheltered berth for vessels and the harbour master is frequently in the position of turning away ships during depressions in the general economy and the shipping rate market.
The incongruity of these large vessels lying moored in the river only a few feet from shore is proving an attraction to visitors and the ferry and passenger boats that travel the river between Falmouth and Truro dropping passengers off at Trelissick Gardens are enjoying a brisk trade. The ships lie at Anchor just upstream from King Harry Ferry.
