Porthcurno Beach and Telegraph Museum

Video Porthcurno Beach and Telegraph Museum

Video of Porthcurno beach, popular with families on holiday with young children.  The beach enjoys a micro-climate as it is sheltered in almost every direction from the prevailing wind.

The cliffs and coastline around Porthcurno are officially designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  The South West coastal footpath passes through the area.   On the cliffs to the west of the beach is the world famous open air Minack Theatre.

During the Second World War Porthcurno was a critical communications centre for Britain and vulnerable to attack from the German Air Force.   To protect the communications centre a tunnel was bored into the granite valley side to house the vital telegraph equipment.  The Tunnel atmosphere being dry, and at a regular consistent temperature was be ideal for the sensitive telegraph equipment.   It now forms the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum which offers a fascinating look at the history of cable communications.  Today Porthcurno is simply a landing stage for the high capacity fibre optic cables make their first landfall in the UK in Cornwall at Porthcurno.
